About the Lecture: Lecture: In Between Folklorization and Political appropriation, the Uyghur dances on and off stage with Mukaddas Mijit
This seminar will aim to discuss how Uyghur traditional dances were used in different periods of recent Uyghur history to shape and promote cultural Identity, to attract Han tourists and more recently to hide the true nature of the re-education camps in the Uyghur Region.
Bio:⠀⠀⠀
Mukaddas Mijit is an ethnomusicologist, filmmaker, dancer, and music manager. She was born and raised in the Uyghur homeland. She studied dance and music at Xinjiang Arts institute before moving to Paris in 2003. She obtained her MA at the University of Sorbonne on Sufi practice in Ghulja, and was awarded her PhD in ethnomusicology at the University of Paris Nanterre in 2015, researching the “Staging of Uyghur Music and Dance”. She has published several articles in edited volumes and peer reviewed journals including Cahier d'Ethnomusicologie. She has made four substantial documentaries and a series of short films on Uyghur culture.
